Celebrating when rice was king and Colleton County was the throne.

Carolina Gold, King Rice. Rice helped create enormous wealth for the Lowcountry since it first arrived in 1685. And Colleton County was perfect for growing it.

The Colleton County Rice Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Colleton County and the contributions made by this cash crop with an arts and cultural festival in the county seat of Walterboro. Enjoy three fun-filled days of family activities in the warm South Carolina spring sun.

Wander the streets of our county seat, Walterboro, and experience a full schedule of family activities.

We suggest you start your visit to the Rice Festival at the Walterboro Welcome Center, located just off I-95 at exit 53. Let us show you why Walterboro is the front porch of the Lowcountry. There, you'll find plenty of tips about what to see and do before, during and after the Rice Festival.

As a state with a rich cultural and historical heritage, South Carolina has a full calendar of festivals that occur throughout the year.  The SC Festival list runs the gamut from typical small town street fairs to full blown, world –class events in the larger cities . . . and a little bit of everything in between.  That’s what makes the SC Festival list such a drawing card from a tourism standpoint, and something that makes our state worthy of the attention it draws on a national and international level.

One SC Festival not to be missed is the Colleton County Rice Festival, which has been a major spring event for nearly 40 years.  Typically held in April or May, the Rice Festival offers a full weekend of fun in the South Carolina sun.  As a Colleton County event, it is held every year in downtown Walterboro – the county seat.  As with a number of the events you will find on the SC Festival list, the Colleton County Rice Festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the area and honors the contributions rice plantations made in the growth of the area.  It’s a SC Festival that honors King Rice as it was called in its heyday, a time when rice was the main cash crop in the area.

The SC Festival has all the elements that make it fun for the entire family.  Central to the festival is an arts and crafts area with a wide array of handcrafted items.  But remember, preparation for the festival begins in March when the queen of the Rice Festival is crowned.  She serves as the honorary hostess to the festival, and takes her rightful place of honor in the Rice Festival Parade as it meanders through downtown as a kickoff event to the festival.  A 5K run is another signature event for the festival, as well as a cooking contest featuring all sorts of rice dishes.  And, what SC Festival is complete without a food court area?  Sprinkle in a few tried-and-true activities such as fireworks, and you’ve got an event sure to please the entire family.

As you make a list of things to do and see in our state, be sure to add this SC Festival to your plans.  It’s one of the best ways we know that you can experience the front porch of the Lowcountry . . . Colleton County and Walterboro.
