As a state with a rich cultural and historical heritage, South Carolina has a full calendar of festivals that occur throughout the year. The SC Festival list runs the gamut from typical small town street fairs to full blown, world –class events in the larger cities . . . and a little bit of everything in between. That’s what makes the SC Festival list such a drawing card from a tourism standpoint, and something that makes our state worthy of the attention it draws on a national and international level. One SC Festival not to be missed is the Colleton County Rice Festival, which has been a major spring event for nearly 40 years. Typically held in April or May, the Rice Festival offers a full weekend of fun in the South Carolina sun. As a Colleton County event, it is held every year in downtown Walterboro – the county seat. As with a number of the events you will find on the SC Festival list, the Colleton County Rice Festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the area and honors the contributions rice plantations made in the growth of the area. It’s a SC Festival that honors King Rice as it was called in its heyday, a time when rice was the main cash crop in the area. The SC Festival has all the elements that make it fun for the entire family. Central to the festival is an arts and crafts area with a wide array of handcrafted items. But remember, preparation for the festival begins in March when the queen of the Rice Festival is crowned. She serves as the honorary hostess to the festival, and takes her rightful place of honor in the Rice Festival Parade as it meanders through downtown as a kickoff event to the festival. A 5K run is another signature event for the festival, as well as a cooking contest featuring all sorts of rice dishes. And, what SC Festival is complete without a food court area? Sprinkle in a few tried-and-true activities such as fireworks, and you’ve got an event sure to please the entire family. As you make a list of things to do and see in our state, be sure to add this SC Festival to your plans. It’s one of the best ways we know that you can experience the front porch of the Lowcountry . . . Colleton County and Walterboro. |
